I HAVE OWNED THIS UNIT FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND 1/2 NOW AND KNOW OF TWO OTHERS IN OPERATION FOR ABOUT THE SAME DURATION. THE UNIT IS SLOW TO LOAD, I’LL HAVE TO GIVE THE OTHER COMPLAINERS THAT, BUT ONCE YOU GET OVER THE INITIAL WAIT PERIOD, (GO DO SOMETHING ELSE UNTIL THE BEAST IS READY) THE OUTPUT IS FANTASTIC, BOTH BLU RAY AND STANDARD DVD UPSCALED. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THE PERFORMANCE AT ALL, (NOT COUNTING THE OCCASIONAL GOOFINESS THAT MANY THINGS DIGITAL DO, ONCE IN A WHILE I HAVE TO RESTART), BUT MOSTLY THIS IS PRETTY ERROR FREE. AS FOR THE LATER AUDIO FORMATS, REGULAR DOLBY DIGITAL AND DTS ARE FINE WITH ME, SO I DON’T CARE IF IT WON’T HANDLE THE LATEST AUDIO CODEC. NONE OF THE UNITS I KNOW ABOUT HAVE EXPERIENCED ANY MAJOR DIFFICULTY OR NEEDED SERVICE. I HAVE DOWNLOADED AND BURNED THE LATEST FIRMWARE UPGRADE BUT NOT YET INSTALLED. “500 DAYS OF SUMMER” WOULD NOT PLAY WITHOUT AN UPGRADE, BUT OTHER THAN THAT IT HAS PLAYED ANYTING I HAVE THROWN AT IT. PLAYS DISCS MY DENON DVD-3930CI BALKS AT FOR SOME STRANGE REASON. A STANDARD DVD OF “THE DARK KNIGHT” LOOKED JUST ABOUT AS GOOD AS BLU RAY. AWESOME VIDEO PERFORMANCE IF NOT THE FASTEST TO LOAD. SONY DOESN’T SAY WHAT KIND OF VIDEO CHIP THEY ARE USING, BUT WHATEVER IT IS, IT IS FAR BETTER THAN YOUR BARGAIN BRAND MODEL FROM ANY MANUFACTURER.
